John Kisthardt

John Nicholas Kisthardt passed away on November 6, 2021, in LVHN Cedar Crest after several months of critical illness. John was born in Hazelton on January 5, 1942, to Beulah (Miller) and John W. Kisthardt. The family moved to Slatington when John was in 7th grade. After graduating from Slatington High School in 1960, John enlisted in the U.S.Navy. While in the Navy he served aboard the USS St. Paul and USS Helena. He returned to Slatington in 1964 and married Sara (Neff) in 1965. He worked at Traylor Engineering and Bethlehem Steel before starting his 30+ year career at Horsehead Resource Development, formerly New Jersey Zinc Company.
A devoted, loving father, grandfather and husband, he was also incredibly active in many community organizations.  Over his lifetime he served as Zoning Officer of Washington Township, member of the Planning Commission of Washington Township, multiple positions on the Slatington Public Library Board (which he served for nearly 30 years), percussionist in the Parryville Band, Board Member of the Slatedale Cemetery, and Board Member of the Horsehead Community Development Fund.
John is survived by his wife Sara, daughters Allison and Anne, son-in-law Tim Shinkle, grandchildren John “Harry” and Georgina Shinkle, brother James, cousins, nieces, nephew and brother-in-law, as well as cats Rosie and Buddy.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting contributions in John’s memory to the Slatington Public Library 650 Main Street, Slatington, PA, 18080. A memorial service will be planned in late Spring.  Arrangements are in the care of Harding Funeral Home, Slatington.
