Charles Nicholas “Nick” Carter, 92, formerly of Union, NJ, passed away peacefully at his home in Walnutport, PA, on October 10, 2026.  He taught insurance with vigor and humor for over fifty years at the Professional School of Business in Millburn, NJ.  Those who knew Nick will forever remember his special brand of wit, his kindness, and his passion for learning.  He approached life with an infectious enthusiasm—whether searching for the perfect daiquiri, enjoying a good cup of coffee or classic movie, or exploring his love for insurance, books, and mechanical clocks.  Nick leaves behind a legacy of generously sharing the things that gave him joy with everyone he loved.

Nick was born on December 6, 1933, to Price and Elmyra Carter.  The youngest of four children, he was raised in Elizabeth, NJ and spent many of his later years recounting fond memories of his family, neighbors, and childhood pets, including Louie, his beloved terrier. Early in his life, Nick was an active member and officer of St. Paul’s Church, having served as congregation president.  Later, Nick raised his own family in Union, where he lived for nearly 60 years and served as a trustee, treasurer, and usher of Union’s First Baptist Church on Colonial Avenue.

Nick proudly served in the United States Army after joining the ROTC in high school.  He was stationed at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana and Fort Devens in Massachusetts before his honorable discharge in 1957.  During a break in service, Nick attended the University of Maine at Orono.  It was there, in the college theater, that he met Evelyn Jane Stevenson, the woman who would become his wife of nearly 36 years until her early death in 1992.  Their shared passion brought them together: Nick loved acting and served as the head of publicity, and Evelyn designed and created costumes.  After marrying, the couple lived in Baltimore before settling down to build a life together in New Jersey.  Although Nick initially worked as an underwriter for Travelers Insurance Company, he ultimately discovered his true calling in teaching. It was a profession that he genuinely loved and suited him well, stretching all the way into his late 80s.

Throughout his life, Nick was a loyal husband and steadfast provider, faithful Christian, and loving father to his three daughters, Nancy, Sally, and Amy.  He spent many enjoyable vacations in the company of his wonderful grandchildren, Becca, Lizzie, Abby, and Ben, and he was completely enchanted by his dear great granddaughter, Elodie.  Nick also shared a unique bond with his sons-in-law, Rich and Jeff, who were not just family, but some of his closest friends. He truly delighted in their many conversations about cars, golf, and other important topics.

Nick’s life will forever remain woven into the hearts of everyone who knew him.  The family plans to hold a private memorial service and burial.  In lieu of flowers, donations to a favorite charity in Nick’s name are requested.
