Janet I. Berger, 88, of Walnutport, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, January 8, 2026. Born in Allentown, she was the daughter of the late Leonard B. and Edna H. (Snyder) Merkle. Janet was the devoted wife of the late Morris L. Berger, with whom she shared 49 years of marriage before his passing in December of 2005.
Janet worked for 15 years at Aramark and was known for her strong independence and determination, often repeating her famous line “I don’t need help, I can do it myself.” Janet enjoyed bingo at the Diamond Fire Company, shopping at Boscov’s, baking, and playing card games with her family. She loved watching her favorite shows Golden Girls and Charlie Chan, collecting elephants, and spending time at her favorite restaurant, City View Diner. Above all, Janet adored her family, especially her grandchildren & great-grandchildren. Janet will be remembered for her strength, her devotion to family, and the simple pleasures that filled her life.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Leonard M. Berger and wife, Sharon of Walnutport; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two great-great-granddaughters; three sisters, Dolly Toth, Thelma Trapp, and Diana Arnold; as well as her daughter-in-law, Anna Berger of Lansford. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Kenneth R. Berger.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, January 16, 2026, at Harding Funeral Home, 25-27 N. 2nd St., Slatington, PA 18080. Family and friends are invited to pay their respects one hour prior to the service between 10- 11 AM. Burial will follow services at Arlington Memorial Park in Whitehall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Janet’s memory to American Cancer Society c/o the funeral home.
