Walnutport

Robert A. Bird, 85, of Walnutport, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 28, 2025, at Kirland Village in Bethlehem. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to the late Darlene T. (Rockel) Bird who passed away in October of 2018. Born in Walnutport, he was the last surviving child of seven, born to the late Earl C. and Lottie M. (Davidson) Bird.

Robert graduated from Northampton High School in 1957 and spent over 33 years working as a coil winder in the Electrical Repair Shop at Bethlehem Steel. After retiring, he continued working part-time as a repairman at Black & Decker. From 1958 to 1962, Robert honorably served in the United States Navy.

Robert was a devoted member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Berlinsville, where he generously gave his time and skills to help build and wire the rectory. He also attended many men's retreats at Malvern, which he held close to his heart.

Robert was an avid fisherman and a proud member of several local clubs, including Blue Mountain Fish & Game, Petersville Rod & Gun Club, and Point Phillips Rod & Gun Club. Above all, Robert deeply loved his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His presence, warmth, and quiet strength will be truly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He also had a deep love for working with wood. If Robert liked you, chances are he carved a personalized wooden nameplate just for you. So, if you ever walk into a business or establishment and see a wooden nameplate, please know it may have been lovingly crafted by Robert and take a moment to think of him.

Robert will be lovingly remembered by his sons, Michael A. Bird of Walnutport and James E. Bird of Greensboro, NC; Grandchildren: Andrew R., and Nicole J.; and many nieces and nephews who held special places in Robert’s heart. In addition to his wife and parents, Robert was predeceased by his son Thomas Bird and eight siblings.

A Memorial Mass will be held and announced at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Harding Funeral Home, Slatington. In lieu of flowers, contributions can please be made in Robert’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis TN 38105.
