Nancy Heiney

May 13, 1939 — July 14, 2021

Nancy Jane Heiney, nee Handwerk, 82 years old, of Allentown, PA passed away peacefully on July 14, 2021.

She was born May 13, 1939 in Slatington, PA to William and Mae Handwerk (nee Martz). Nancy married John Heiney of Walnutport, PA in Elkton, MD on December 5, 1959. They were married 61 years.

After graduation from Slatington High School in 1957, she attended St. Luke’s nursing program.  In 1960 she left with a LPN degree and tended to patients at the Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital. In 1972 Nancy returned to St. Lukes’s to obtain her RN license and began working at Lehigh Valley Hospital. She spent most of her career there as a night shift nursing supervisor  before retiring in 2003.

Nancy was a woman who immersed herself in her nursing profession and was committed to her family and friends. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, sewing, and shopping – especially Hess’s famous clean-up sales -- as well as collecting and organizing her ‘treasures’.

Nancy was predeceased by her parents. Nancy is survived by her husband, John Heiney, daughters, Jane Kogut Keyser (Brian) of Newtown, PA and Carol Waldner (Joseph) of Harrisburg, PA and her four grandchildren: Katherine (Katie) Kogut, Matthew (Chet) Kogut, Rachel Waldner, and Lauren Waldner. In addition, she is survived by her two sisters, Doris Betzenberger and Marie Handwerk, two nieces: Judy Chies and Jill Stanley, and two nephews: Eric Betzenberger and Stephen Mack.

The family thanks her care providers, social workers, chaplains, and volunteers at Buckingham Valley Rehabilitation Center and their Hospice Program for support.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service to celebrate her life to be held on Thursday, July 22, 2021 at the Harding Funeral Home , 25 N 2nd St., Slatington, PA 18080. Viewing and visitation will commence at 10:00am, followed by a memorial service at 11:00. A luncheon will be held immediately following the service. Her interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, please attend the memorial service to celebrate her life.  If you cannot be present, she directed in her wishes that you have some “wine and cheese” and “talk and laugh”.
